Excellence cluster 4: Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM)

Nanostructures play an increasing role in information technology and life sciences. In recent years many individual modules have been developed in the nanometer range. However, there is little experience so far, how these components can be integrated into complex systems. It is therefore a principal object of NIM to produce a wide range of artificial and multifunctional nanosystems, to understand their functioning and ultimately to control them. Only in this way these can be harnessed for applications in information technology and in the life sciences. In total ten subareas it comes from, for example, quantum phenomena in nanosystems to "lab-on-a-chip" applications. NIM brings together internationally renowned scientists from various research facilities in Munich and different disciplines such as physics, biophysics, physical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, biology, electrical engineering and medicine to an unique research network.
